Work from home, especially when you work online, means that you can set your own work schedule and make your own rules. Your choice of product or service will ultimately determine the amount of work you need to do to create an income. For instance, if you are turning a hobby into an income generating business, you will have to factor in the time it takes to create your product for sale. You will also need to devote a significant amount of time marketing your new business opportunity.

Sometimes the tasks at hand can seem to be overwhelming. It can be difficult to prioritize and get started when everything seems to be the most important thing to do. When you work alone the weight of responsibility can be paralyzing. Pushing through the feeling of overwhelm and starting on a small task helps to get your motivation flowing. Once you are in work mode it is easier to move from one task to the next. Before you know it you will have worked through you list of things to do.

An alternative to creating your own product of service is affiliate marketing. Companies who have adopted an affiliate marketing plan will offer their products to you. When you enter into an affiliate program agreement you immediately have products, marketing materials which often includes a professional website to aid in your promotions. Every time you make a sale you will earn a commission. You have your own business and the ability to create long term residual income.

Regardless of the type of home based business you choose, you will have to be totally committed and focused on doing whatever is necessary to build your business. Setting and following a schedule will help to minimize home based business procrastination, the plague of the entrepreneur.

Business Opportunity Part 12 - Step by Step SEO - SEO Specifics - Page Rank!

I am going through the whole process of basic SEO (search engine optimization) in getting a web site to the top of search engine result pages which includes just what SEO really is and what it is about.

This is the twelfth article in this series.

Let's discuss Page Rank. What it is and what it does for you as far as SEO goes.

I will say that Page Rank is very controversial when it comes to search engine optimization. Depending on who you are talking to or what you are reading, Page Rank is either very important or has little significance when attempting to reach high search engine ranking positions. I have personally looked at many sources of information on the subject trying to find the truth. It finally came down to looking at the information Google has on the subject.

Note: When discussing Page Rank, it is important to note that Page Rank is specific to just what it implies...a page! You can have a number of pages on a web site and each one of those pages can achieve Page Rank.

The first thing to note is that Page Rank is exclusive to Google. None of the other search engines use it. It was created by Google and it is exclusively for their use. Because they command 50% to 75% of all search engine advertising, it is important to achieve high Page Rank to get high ranking positions in Google.

It can get fairly technical trying to explain how Page Rank works so I will chop it down quite a bit.

Basically, Page Rank is a whole number that Google assigns to a web site. The number is based on the amount of popularity or relevancy that site has. Numbers range from PR of 0 to a PR of 10. The higher the number is (ex. PR4 verses a PR1), the more popular the web site. The Page Rank number is based on many many complex algorithms no matter what you hear. What holds true though is that a good part of the equation is based on the total amount of web pages or "votes" you are obtaining links from. Recently we talked about back links.

I stated at one time that links are not always built the same or have the same significance. The significance or "weight" that Google places on each link is determined by the importance of the web site linking to you. Depending on how high the Page Rank is from where your back link is coming from, the more importance Google places on it.

Will say that again.

The more relevant the web site linking to "your" web site depends on the relevancy (on topic with what you are doing) and the Page Rank value that site has.

Let's say you have a hundred inbound (back links) coming to your site but they are all from web sites that have little to no Page Rank. You have 3 or 4 back links coming from sites that have at least a page rank of 4 or 5 in value. These 3 or 4 links would carry much more value or "weight" from Google. These 3 or 4 links will do a lot more to raise your site up in the search engine rankings.

Another way to look at it. You would think that from what you have just read that having a high Page Ranked site would give you higher search engine ranking positions. There is a catch though.

Not always true. For example, say that there is a web site which is positioned in front of you in the search engine result listings. You though have a much higher number of reciprocal links and back links. Your Page Rank is "higher" than the web site has that is in front of you.

They have a higher ranking position than your site but you have a higher Page Rank. It means they are doing more in SEO than you are in specific areas. It could be something like putting out more content with more consistency than you. Maybe they are getting alot of traffic and the visitors are staying on their site quite awhile. Google looks at things like that. Maybe their domain name has "aged" and been around a lot longer than yours.

There are hundreds of algorithms that determine ranking positions and hundreds that determine Page Rank.

You would think that Page Rank and ranking positions would be synonymous with each other but they are not.

If all this is true...Why care about Page Ranks?

In a nutshell, your ranking position is determined in many ways by what you are doing on a continual basis. Page Rank is more a long term value which you need to strive for.

This team of network marketers are combining our efforts to obtain high positions in search engines like Google for higher level type keyword phrases. How many people do you know that have a real passion for the things they do in life? I'm sure you know someone who has had an encounter with death and the impact it has had on their lives. They will usually tell you that they view life from a different perspective and have a deeper appreciation for the things they have. Hopefully we don't have to have such an experience to develop a passion for life. Maybe we all have an innate passion but have forgotten this fact.

I remember in High School my teacher asking the class if anyone would like to be a professional tuba player. All but one student groaned and laughed at the thought of earning a living at such an occupation. It seemed ludicrous. However, that was until the one student that disagreed gave his response to the question. His reply was simple but it made us all think. He simply said that if a person became a professional tuba player they would surely have a passion for playing the tuba, such that they were good enough to be a professional. They would most likely love playing the tuba.

So it is with anything we do in life. We have to have passion if we want to be successful. How many people do you know that want to be a better golfer, or piano player, or even a better speaker, but lack the passion to improve their ability? All it takes is some passion to improve whatever we want to improve in our lives.

If you are serious about a home based business, ask yourself if you have the passion it takes to be successful. I believe that this is the one common factor among those who start a home based business and fail. They just don't have the passion required to be successful. Some may refer to it as self-discipline, desire, commitment or any other name, but to me it is simply having a passion for what you do. Without passion we lack the driving force that leads to success.

Look at successful people and you will notice they have a passion for whatever it is they do. It only makes sense. If you don't enjoy what you do you will not want to do it. You come to hate it. Despise it. Ask some of your friends and they will likely tell you they hate their job. Yet the majority of people do nothing about it. They remain stuck in a rut for life, only wishing they had something better. And all they need is a little passion for something and it could change their lives. What an existence, for that's what is has become for so many people. Hating Mondays and wishing it was Friday.

If you have even the slightest intention of going into any type of home based business, be sure that you can be passionate about it. It is the passion that will lead you to success. And the good thing is that you will enjoy the journey. Without the passion you will eventually fail. Be passionate and be successful!

One of the most dreaded things when it comes to our daily job is that we are told by our employer when we have to work. They tell us when we have to be at work, how long we have to stay there and when we can go home. And if we don't follow their directions we don't have a job. In reality, we are giving our employer our time in exchange for a pay cheque.

Having your own home based business changes all this. Your time is now truly yours, so be careful how you use it. You should start by forgetting about that particular phrase, because you no longer use your time, you now have to manage your time. It doesn't sound like much, but there is a difference. A very important difference. If you don't learn how to manage your time you will most likely find that you don't have enough of it.

Working from home is a serious change for most people. It will first seem like you have all the time in the world to get things done. Since you are in charge of your time you get to decide when you work. A nice thought, at first. For example, maybe you have to make a few phone calls, but you just put it off until later. After all you do have all day. Or maybe you will sit down later in the evening to do a few things. Before you know it, the day is over and you haven't gotten around to do some of the things that needed getting done. But, you have all day tomorrow, right?

You can be certain that if you fail to manage your time, you will fail at your home based business. It is that simple. And many people do not learn how to manage their time. They use their time, rather than manage it. They use it for doing things that are not important to building a successful business. Why? Because they make the mistake of thinking that they have all the time in the world to get things done. Before they know it they are out of time. The cycle has begun. And it is not long in beginning. Many people who are new to the work at home industry find themselves in this situation and it can be devastating.

Learning how to manage your time takes practice and determination. There are so many distractions when working at home that if you do not control the situations, they will soon control you. However, if you can learn how to manage your time efficiently, you will be able to do many other things and still get your work related activities completed. It will take lots of self discipline but it is a necessity if you are to succeed in building your home based business.

You are now in charge of your time and you better manage it wisely. There are only twenty-four hours in each day and we have to make the best of it. Mastering your time management will allow you to complete your work related tasks and still give you time for other commitments. If you don't manage your time you will become so disorganized that you'll find you have no time to get anything done. You just don't have enough time!

Part 8 - Step by Step SEO - Creating Your Web Site!

This is the eighth article in this series.

Okay. We are at that point in time where we have chosen our keywords, keyword phrases, and domain name...now we need to design a web site. There are two schools of thought here:

1.) Optimization for search engine optimization

2.) Designing the web site for our visitors.

Remember that SEO is all about getting traffic to your site by getting top positions in search engine rankings. Search engines have algorithms in place that statistically determine if visitors to your site remain there, for how long, where they went to once they arrived...all kinds of things. You and I have done this over time and, quite a bit. You go to a web site that is ugly and hard to get around. Maybe we can't find the information we were seeking. What do we do? We leave!

If you have a web site and your visitors leave as soon as they get there, that is not a good thing for SEO!

So, optimization "and" design of your web site go hand in hand.

With that in mind, the hardest part of building an internet business (in my mind) is creating your web site. You have to build it first before you can optimize and customize it!

If you know little to nothing about html code, you are faced with an extremely large learning curve because that is what you need to build a web site. If you search the internet, you will find free html tools and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) programs that will help you with your html coding. I grabbed some of them and found I still needed to know quite a bit to make things work.

Your best bet if you want to get around all of that is using WordPress. There are thousands of pre-made templates that you can use to create a web site in no time. There are also hundreds of what are called "plugins" that you can upload to your site and turn on for just about whatever enhancements you need. There are even plugins that can be used to assist you in your SEO.

If you do scrap html code and use WordPress, there is one thing you need to know.

Not all templates are built the same. You could experience compatibility issues with your WordPress theme template and the various widgets and plugins available. I have not brought up widgets yet. These are plugins that are usually used for sidebars and columns.

If you go the WordPress route, here are a couple things you can do when you are deciding on themes and plugins.

1.) If you are looking at a specific theme, search the internet for reviews and see if there are any issues. You can also usually go to the web site of whoever created the theme and check out users comments. Typically there will be a thread you can browse through.

2.) Install one plugin or widget at a time and verify that there are no problems. This will save you time and headaches if you go this route.

Is Web 2.0 the real deal or just a big lie? There are thousands of differing opinions on the most effective ways to make money in starting a home based business. Millions of newbies are jumping on board with the latest and greatest phenomena known as Web 2.0 believing they can catch the next wave and make tons of money. Before you venture any further into the matrix known as Web 2.0, you need to understand some important distinctions if you really want to maximize your Web 2.0 experience and make money.

I have literally read thousands of articles over the past year. Some good and many are just simply garbage advice. Just because some so called guru tells you that the key to make money in starting a home based business is by jumping on Web 2.0 train, doesn't make it so. In fact, you could be wasting your valuable time and money. Stop listening to anyone telling you it was easy to make money with Web 2.0.

Here are several key points you should consider prior to getting started.

Decide on how you are going to build your online home based business. Do you want to get traffic from social networks (aka Web 2.0) or by organic search results for specific keywords by SEO techniques? There is a big difference in how you approach each one.

Let's start by looking at the approach to building up your presence with Web 2.0 via social networking. If you are the type that wants to brand your name in the social networks as a coach and trainer, then developing your web presence via Web 2.0 platforms makes a lot of sense. Of course you need to have real life experience in that area as someone who is a subject matter expert by personal experience, developed skill sets and an ability to actually coach someone that helps them in building their home based business. Look out for those that have never actually built a successful business. Just Google their name and you will find out very quickly if they are the real deal or not.

Here is a specific example to further clarify and support what I mean. When it comes to branding your name, take a look at someone like Todd Falcone. He has been in the network marketing and direct sales field for 15 plus years and brings real practical experience in building successful businesses. He is a true professional that shares his expertise with the nuts and bolts in your face approach.

You might be thinking, ok, so here is a guy that is successful. Right, but understand the approach he has taken to get where he is today. So its the approach I want you to understand and how many years it actually took for him to reach the highest levels in the industry. He didn't do it over night and nor will you. It was a multi-facet approach. If you are serious about going the route of the Web 2.0 phenomena via social networking, then ensure you understand its a combination of doing everything to build brand name recognition to make money.

One other key point about social networking advice that successful people will share is they always gave back. If you help enough people get what they want, then in time you too can have success in starting a home based business. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication usually over a period of years. Web 2.0 can be a great way to make money if you understand the processes involved and the fact there are no short cuts.

The Importance of Selecting Your Domain Name for Your Home Based Business

If you have selected the keywords that you will be pursuing, it is now time to obtain a domain name.

Everything in search engine optimization is based on keywords...period!

In everything you do regarding SEO, you need to point the way. Search engines are nothing but hundreds and thousands of mathematical equations. They are not human...at least not yet. So, it is up to you for "them" to associate keywords with your web site(s).

With that being the case, everything you do "for" your SEO has to reflect those keywords. It all starts with the domain name.

Hopefully when you select you keywords, you kept it in the back of your mind how you can use them to create a domain name. You want to be able to create your domain name by having at least two keywords in it. If you can get three in it, all the better.

Try this. Browse the internet for your keywords that you have selected and glance at the domain names or what are called "URLs" and see what people come up with. You will notice that at the top of your search listings, more than likely you will detect keywords in the name. As you work your way on down scrolling by pages, the names become more obscure. Many domain names do not even reflect what their web site is about! If you look at the source code for those sites, you will note the same is true about their keywords.

Viewing source code is right clicking with your mouse button on a blank portion of that particular web site and then clicking on "view source".

I guarantee these people are struggling because they do not know what they are doing. I know..I have been there and done that.

Just like keywords, the best way to go about selecting domain names is by using paper and pencil and writing down your ideas. Take your keywords and try various combinations of them. What words work with them? What sounds the best? What is it you want your web site to accomplish? What is the overall theme of your web site?

You want two or three keywords in it but it just might not be practical. Just brainstorm and write everything down.

The very best way to get ideas is to go to one of the hosting companies on the internet where you can purchase domain names. Might as well as you will have to do this anyway. There are plenty of good ones to choose from. One that many people use is Godaddy.com. They typically have a place in them where you type in your ideas or domain names to see if they are available or not. If the name is not available, suggestions pop up of domain names you "can" purchase. The best thing you can do is go to one of these services and get your ideas that way.

Note: To save yourself a few bucks, do a search on the internet for "coupons godaddy"(or whatever hosting company you are buying from). There are usually coupon codes that can be found that will cut your cost a little bit. Domain names though are fairly cheap.

Some other things to keep in mind. Try to keep your domain name on the short side if you can. It just makes things easier for you in the long run and there is that thing called "name recognition". Like everything else when it comes to marketing, the catchier or easier to remember domain names are what you would like to have. Heck, we even do this with the names of our newborn children!

It is better to obtain a name that has the extension of .com if you can get one. It is a name recognition thing as .com's have been around since the early days of the internet. Once you have determined what your domain name is and have purchased it through one of those hosting companies, it usually takes at least 24 hours before it gets propagated through the internet. When you make your purchase, you can buy it for one year or more. Try to get it for at 3-5 years...as long as possible. This helps in your SEO. Search engines do note how long you have a domain name.

There are a lot of ads on the Web offering tons of almost instant money when it comes to setting up an internet home based business. A common phrase such as spend time with family - with an Abundance of cash so you don't have to worry is a sales pitch for a book with all the secrets of becoming rich without a lot of effort. They will even show you the copy of a check for $5,000 to $20,000 dollars to prove that their system works. Do not fall into that trap; every business, whether online or brick and mortar requires time, effort and an initial investment.

You could very well set up an internet home based business by selling a product on eBay. Which is probably the easiest way to start your own web business. If you decide to do so, you should know the following:

1. Get a reliable computer and printer with a fast Internet connection.

2. Analyze, discuss, criticize and decide on your both your business and life goals, both short and long term.

3. Find a niche. Find a product that has unique appeal and properties. Maybe you belong to a collector's club for old vinyl records. That would be a perfect example of a niche.

4. You must find a way to get a steady supply of the goods you are going to sell. A good place to find bargains would be seized property auctions (online). Or go to local auctions, flea markets, garage sales, etc. to find rock bottom prices.

5. Summarize points 1 to 4 into a business plan that makes sense to you and to your family. Consult a business expert if you can afford it and use common sense, your most valuable asset.

6. Register on eBay.

7. Remember that you are establishing a business, whether part or full time, not a hobby.

8. You may want to register (incorporate) your business with the IRS for maximum protection.

9. Keep your business finances completely separate from other income and expenses. Do not mix the two, as this might raise some fiscal eyebrows.

10. Prior to getting started in your own internet home based businesses. Make sure you check with your tax professional and/or your accountant to ensure you are following applicable tax laws.

Now that you ready to do business online, you must photograph your product(s) in such a way that they will be attractive to your customers. After you get the first order, pack and ship the item with the utmost care. Be sure to include a little thank you card in the package to give the customer the feeling that he/she is special. That's how you get them to come back to you. A special aspect of ebay is the feedback from customers; that is a crucial aspect since it will make people more confident to select you as their provider. Tell your clients to make sure they give (positive) feedback.

Now that you have successfully set up your internet home based business, you can plan for the future. For example, why not set up another online business opportunity with its own niche. It would appear that one of the most prevalent problems that still exist in building a home based business, is achieving long term success. Oh sure, people get started in business opportunity and have some limited success for a few short months. However, what about 6, 12 or 36 months into the future? How will your business look at that time? Will you still even be with the same company? So why is it that there is a 95 percent failure rate in this home based business industry? There are five suggestions that I believe are important to understand to impact your business in a positive way.

Given all the available how to books and information on the internet, one would believe that failure rates would be much lower in a home based business, yet they are not. Tough questions need to be asked and more importantly we need to find out why is success so elusive for the majority of people. The other day, I was talking with my friend Cameron about people that are involved in a home based business and how important it is to build for local, national and international events with their respective companies. I started thinking about all the people that I have brought into a business over the past 15 years. What I thought about was, did I bring them in the right way? In other words, were they set up for success from the beginning of their journey. My article is focused on what to do with new people that join you in your home based business.

Once someone joins your organization, understand that the real work has just begun. As a mentor, here are some guidelines that you can incorporate to build team synergy and growth.

First, as simple as this sounds, yet is often over looked, get to know the new person on the team and find out what some of their specific goals are with starting a home based business. For example, have they ever been involved in a home business or is this their first time up to bat? Are they looking for a part time income or are they motivated for replacing their full time income? Without a doubt, one of the critical underlying questions for long term success is to find out if their WHY. I cannot stress the importance of the answer to this question. This will be their internal driving force to endure the ups and downs as they build a home business.

Second, something that I have personally witnessed numerous times, is to have a basic training for the companies back office. In other words, show them around and where to find information, how to sign up someone into their organization. It may sound too basic for some, but remember, many people have never been exposed to the home business industry and affiliate programs etc. They need to know the companies policies - period.

Third, and very important is do 3 way calls with your new person and other leaders in your organization. I recalled in the past 3 companies that I have joined, one of the first things they did was introduce me to other leaders. It was very exciting because they would tell their story about how they got started and what they did to build a viable home based business. This may sound basic to many, but time and time again, I see too many so called leaders fail to do this tiny, but important step. New people want to feel included in the team and know that if you are not around to help them, that they can call someone else to answer their questions etc.

Fourth, develop a business plan with your new person. You need to understand how much time they will invest in starting a home based business. One of the main reasons I have seen for such a high failure rate is the absence of a clearly defined plan on how they will work their new business on a week to week basis. It's the equivalent of starting on the east coast and driving to the west coast without a road map or knowing where you are going.

Fifth, ensure they are on the team email distribution list for upcoming weekly conference calls, team training events, local and national events etc. In other words, get them plugged into the system. We get so busy in our daily lives, we sometimes can overlook to remind our team about important upcoming events. These types of events create a further bond between the new person and team synergy. We like to call that building for team events.

Sure the above suggestions are common sense to many, but they are still critical to your success and the new people that join you. The above are guide lines only and some people may do them in a different order, but the main point here is to get them involved, introduce them to other team members and show them how to make money. There is magic and power when people come together. Friendships are created, bonds become stronger and new people get to see the bigger picture of the overall company. After all, you want them to be part of your home based business team for the long term - right?

Have you tried MLM and failed miserably? Maybe not even making any money, but certainly spending enough. Making that monthly purchase just so you qualify for those cheques, which never materialize, from your down-line! Well, you are not alone. There are literally thousands of people who have traveled the same path as you. Why do so many people, the number is estimated between 90% to 95%, fail at MLM? It is quite simple: they don't fully understand how this particular business model works.

Too many people let their emotions make decisions when it comes to an online MLM business opportunity. All they see is the success of others and they believe that all it takes is three "associates" below them and they are on their way to riches. In a perfect world, maybe. But, we're not there yet.

Let's take at look at MLM from another perspective. Multi-level marketing, network marketing, or whatever name you want to call it, is just another business model. It's far from perfect, but it does work. People that have little or no business background make the mistake of not learning how this particular business model, or system, really works. The theory behind MLM is that a network will be built if you tell three, who tell three, who tell three and so on. The problem here is that everyone who joins a home based business MLM opportunity is focused on getting others to "join". You end up with a bunch, well maybe a couple, of associates all thinking that the other will build the business. Each one of them making their monthly purchase, just waiting for their down line to explode.

All of these people are making the same mistake. They are focusing on getting "associates" rather than customers. Customers are what make any business successful, online or off. if you don't have enough customers you eventually don't have a business. This is not rocket science! To be successful on the Internet (and off-line as well) with an MLM business, people have to change their focus from getting associates/distributors to getting customers. Just think about it for a moment. If you have customers that purchase each month, do you really need anything else? And if you know how to market, some of those customers will most likely become distributors themselves, wanting to build their own successful network marketing business as well. Once this begins to happen, you will be amazed at how your network will grow!

Sometimes all it takes to make a change in something is to look at it from a different perspective. So it is with the MLM industry. Once people start to realize that they must be looking for customers rather than distributors, then they will begin to build a successful business. Those who continue to believe that you can be successful with an MLM business opportunity by building a network of distributors will most likely fail. In reality they usually quit because they have not attained that "over-night " success that many are led to believe will happen. Focus on attaining customers and your online business will grow.

This is the third article in this series.

Here I am going to try and paint a picture of how search engines work, specifically Google.

Why Google? They own the largest part of all search engine advertising on the internet, anywhere from 50% to 85% depending on who you want to believe. At 50% though, I am going to focus on them if I am going to put a lot of time and energy to SEO.

Search engines like Google have a job to do. They want (and need) to optimize our search results. If we are typing in keywords to find information about Martin guitars, we don't really want to see web site after web site in our listings pertaining to Wilson baseball bats. We have an expectation of getting search results closely related to what we are searching for.

Search engines also want to create a level playing field for those competing for top spots within each specific search phrase.

Google is basically performing several tasks by performing queries over the internet for fresh content, indexing all of the important words, comparing results of all of their indexed information, and creating results that justify what you and I are looking for if we do a search.

Here is a basic understanding of what they do.

Within Google, there is a distributed network which contains thousands of your average type computers. These computers are all connected to each other with what is called parallel processing. An analogy of this would be to visualize a chain in how each link connects to each other. These computers work independently as well as simultaneously with each other. The speed is incredible when doing data processing. The process or program that runs on these computers is called Googlebot.

There are multiple steps that occur with Google but I am going to focus on Googlebot. The process Googlebot is always working to obtain fresh content. They do "not" go to each web site like you would think but rather they work like a web browser. They send out queries to web servers requesting pages.

Usually, they do this through the add URL form which for Google is at [http://google.com/addurl.html]http://google.com/addurl.html. If you have created a web site, this is where you would submit your domain name. When they do come and "crawl" your site, they will also index all of your links. They place these into another index file and send out queries through them later.

Note: When you submit your site like this, it can take over a month at least before Google gets to crawling it. There is a way around this which we will talk about later!

Getting back to the web servers, note that typically every domain name is connected to a server. These are the places in which you are paying for their hosting services.

Again, if a web server gets queried and sends the fresh content pages to those thousands of computers, Googlebot will then place the links that they find and place them into a queue. At a later time, they will then send queries to the servers "those" links are pointing to and "grab" the content from "those" pages. This process goes on and on forever!

This all occurs very quickly. While this is all going on, Googlebot also ensures that there are no duplicate links or content so that they do not waste time and re-index a web site. During all of this, there is a process where Googlebot places sites that need revisited into another cue (visit the site soon) URL's. You actually determine the date in which they come back by how often your web sites' content changes. The more often it changes, the more often the site will be crawled.

Note: What I just explained is very important for SEO. You need to be consistent with your changes. You do "not" want Google to crawl your site if they are expecting fresh content. If they do, it will be later and later before they come back and visit your site.

This process where they come back to your site based on content changes are called "fresh crawls".

They are also going to be doing from time to time what is called a "hard crawl". This occurs infrequently throughout the course of a year. During hard crawls, they are sweeping the internet for "everything". They then make comparisons and determine your web sites positions in their search rankings for specific word phrases as well as every other web site on the internet.

Note: I want to point out that when they crawl your site, they are only crawling the page or "pages" you have made changes to. They are not indexing your whole site.

Had enough? It is not important to know the above but there are people like me that like to understand in some way the bigger picture. Knowing this can help though when you are doing SEO!

In the next part of this series, I will go into SEO specifically. I will start off with what is probably the most important thing you can do and that is determining your keywords.

There are various reasons why or why you should not start an SEO campaign. I will break this down a bit.

The negatives:

1.) Time! This is a big determining factor when beginning an SEO campaign. I believe most people who actually initiate an SEO campaign do not have a true realization of how long it could take. Most have false expectations which are probably due to some of the stuff you see on the internet. I often hear about claims that you can have your web site in top positions within days or weeks. If any of these claims were true, I would be a rich man and so would everyone else.

Warning! If you are looking at hiring an SEO expert to do your SEO, be careful of the SEO scams that are out there. They might claim to have top positions for some keywords yet if you investigate, you will find that they are easily obtained positions which do "not" get any traffic. Hiring a genuine SEO expert will cost you a lot of money for a legitimate keyword phrase.

Look at it this way...if there were some kind of tool or software program that would get you to the top quickly, everyone would have it!

Getting a particular keyword phrase to the top of Google's search engine rankings can take an incredible amount of time. As a matter of fact, the more financial gain a particular keyword phrase would command, the tougher the competition will be. In respect to time, you are looking at probably not days or months but possibly years! Just so I do not scare you away, there are keywords and keyword phrases that you can obtain with much less traffic that you could acquire in weeks.

As noted, I am probably scaring you a little bit. There is a way to get traffic much sooner than months or years which I will go over at a later time. I am generally speaking now about your higher traffic type keywords. I will say there are factors that weigh into the process for each individual keyword phrase you decide to compete for. Again, I will get into that later in this series. Most people typically "give up" or do not want to start because of the time factor. In today's society, most people are looking for quick gratification.

2.) Work Involved! An SEO campaign, again depending on the keywords, takes a "LOT" of work. Most of it involves writing which by itself, keeps the majority of people looking for other means to get traffic to their web site.

To me, there are only these two negatives but they are enough to stop people in their tracks.

The positives:

1.) Financially rewarding! If you embark on an SEO campaign and succeed, to me (depending on your keywords) you have made the big time. You "will" have a successful money making business working from home in your pajamas. As a matter of fact, once you have a good income stream built up, there are things you can do to deliver even more traffic to your site and increase your earnings.

Needless to say, getting top positions for high "quality" word phrases (again "keywords) are difficult to get. Because of the financial reward of having a web site in top related word results, competition if very high.

The internet offers unlimited potential in my observations. However, too many people are trying to jump on board some get rich program that simply never works. The result after only a few months, is another chunk of change wasted and your spirits broken once more. Prior to getting involved in any home based business, you need to check out the owner, the company, compensation plan, products/services and yes the leaders in the field as much as possible by Googling their names etc.

There are some elements that you need to be aware of for affiliate websites. Yes, many look good and will be adequate to get your message across, but how will they find your site? The answer is they won't because its an affiliate website. If you can't SEO optimize your home based business website, then you have zero chance of getting to the top of the search engines.

This doesn't cost anything but your effort. I take that back. You will have to get a domain name and a hosting service. Trust me though, not much money involved doing this. What about the potential prospect? We really do not know, what a win-win situation would be for them. We can make an assumption and guess at what a person would want. We could assume that making money is one of their main objective. However, it could be something very different. It could be that is a person desire to help people and make a difference in the world. For each person the objectives are somewhat different. The only way to know for sure is to to ask them. The best advice during this phase of the process is to listen to what they are saying, but more importantly how they are coming across. In other words, do they sound interested, upbeat, motivated seem to have a real desire to be part of a team. Its your business and you should be careful about who you end up investing your time with. Those that want it badly, will rise to the top.

If you are truly dedicated to reach a win-win situation, your goal must be to reach a deep understanding of what a win-win would be for them and then honestly assessing whether or not your opportunity would create that. It does not do any good to just bring someone on so that you can say you have someone in you down line if they do not really want to work the business. Trust me, it happens all the time. You bring someone in, they go at it for 30 or 60 days, then go into some sort of MLM witness protection program.

On the other hand, if you believe your business opportunity would be a good match for the person, go ahead and explain why you feel this business would be good for them. While recently reading a book on the whole win-win opportunity, so information stood out as very important. The book describes the three stages of decision-making in the sales process.

Step 1: The decision-maker (your prospect) comes to a better understanding of the situation they are facing. (This is where your question-answer dialogue helps her.)

Step 2: The decision-maker explores their possible options and solutions. (This is that other critical step I mentioned, and it is where many network marketer's falter.)

Step 3: The decision-makers put it all together and picks the best option for themselves.

You might wonder why I say that many MLMers falter in the second stage. The answer is that we naturally want our option to be the only one the prospect considers. Nevertheless, the person you are talking with needs to be free to consider all the options available to them before making a choice, if not they might never be happy. The good news is, if you truly understand the situation and genuinely believe that your opportunity is the best solution, and if you have effectively communicated why you think that way, chances are good that your prospect will end up agreeing with you. And then you will get to enjoy the most treasured of all outcomes

As we know, people know when they are being pushed or manipulated. Throughout this whole conversation, you have been creating rapport and building trust. If you suddenly start pitching your solution as the only one, your prospect might just reject the whole idea. They might start talking about how they need to think a the whole idea over for a few days, and maybe they will get back to you in a couple of weeks. In most situations, it would be said that you just lost them.

To achieve your win-win goal, you must make it totally clear to them, both in your words and in your actions, that you support their right to explore all the different options. Due to the rising cost of everything these days, people from around the globe are looking for real alternatives. Thousands everyday are thinking about having a home based business opportunity. Do you even know what it takes to develop a successful business? Those are important questions you need to consider prior to starting any home based business opportunity. It all starts with having the proper mindset. Think about the statement for minute. Having the proper mindset, plus knowing what you need to do to develop a business are key ingredients to being successful.

What are some options? The fact is many choose to be involved in a home based business opportunity that are usually affiliated to a Network Marketing company, or MLM. There are a few things that you want to avoid and a few things that you should be looking for. Choose a company that has products you have an interest in. Don't get involved in something that you will not enjoy. You might as well keep your day job. There is no sense in starting an online business so you can work from home and hate it. For example, I prefer the health and wellness field only because of the number of baby boomers retiring on a daily basis and continuing for the next 15 plus years. Plus the fact, nutritional products are consumed every month, resulting in people ordering each month. Hence, you have residual income.

Pick companies that have been around for a few years. Somewhere between three and five years is a good indication that the company has been established. Each day there are more and more companies being formed that are looking for those eager to work from home. The only problem with these new companies is that they have not yet been established and the Internet is a very competitive place. With so many choices, why would you chance it on a start up. Ya, I know you heard about the ground floor opportunity. But really, if the business is solid, waiting a couple of years, means it should be better in that time.

Next, you need to look at your business plan. You need to put it on paper and decide how you will develop your Home Based Business. Consider both the short term and long term goals of what you want to accomplish. Typically, most businesses won't make money in MLM, but the few that do, takes anywhere from 3 to 5 years if you are serious about your home business. If you believe that you can make money out of the starting block, forget it. Look at your business as a long term investment.

What about a budget? Well, how do yo plan to pay for everything? You may have to do some advertising. That will cost money. To help with your business you may decide to purchase any one of the numerous marketing programs that are available on the Internet. That will cost money, usually in the form of a monthly fee. Give serious consideration to these types of programs and be sure you understand what you are buying. Some are just a waste of your money. Try to set up a budget for twelve months. Include all the expenditures that you can think of. I noticed many MLM companies have their own internal marketing programs as additional expenses.

As outlined above, I have discussed a few areas that you need to understand and know what you are getting yourself into for a Home Based Business Opportunity. It will not be easy and you will be working typically for a few years before seeing any significant gains.
